Science Tutor Philippines: understood in one language, marked in another
Science tutor support across the Philippines works on both halves of the grade: the concept and the English it is written in. From Grade 4 the subject is taught and examined in English, and plenty of learners follow the lesson yet lose points on how the answer was written. One tutor, one learner, home or online.

What isScience tutoring
A tutor sits with one learner through whichever DepEd Science strand is due that term. Work starts from the learner's own notebook and the quiz that just came back marked, because a wrong answer there usually shows whether an idea went missing, or whether it was there and never made it onto the page in the English the exam expects.
Key Points
1Kindergarten through Grade 12, including General Science in Senior High
2Taught in English from Grade 4, so the wording of an answer carries points of its own
3MATATAG covers Science through Grade 9; Grade 10 sits on MELC until SY 2027-2028
4A session cannot hand a learner a bunsen burner or a dissection tray. It can make sure they understood what the experiment was testing
5The per-hour rate is already on this page; the learner's exact figure gets written down before you book a single hour
How You Learn
Two ways to run it
The tutor and the plan are the same; the difference is logistics
per session
Duration: 90-120 minutes
At your home
Useful when the learner needs to spread out a textbook, a returned paper and a diagram at once. Younger learners in particular follow a drawn explanation better when someone is sitting next to the page.
Diagrams drawn and labelled together, by hand
Returned papers gone through line by line
No travel at the end of a school day
per session
Duration: 60-90 minutes
Online
A video call with the screen shared both ways. When a cell diagram or a circuit needs labeling, the tutor marks it up live, right on the image the learner is already looking at, so the label lands on the exact part being discussed.
Diagrams and simulations shown on screen
Practical outside a tutor's travel radius
Simple to add a session before a quarterly exam
Why Choose Us
How we approach Science
What we are prepared to put in writing
01
We check the language before blaming the science
From Grade 4 the subject is taught and examined in English. A learner who cannot define the terms will read a question wrongly no matter how well they understand the idea underneath it.
02
Matched by strand: biology, chemistry, physics, earth science
A tutor strong in biology is not automatically strong in physics. Tell us which part is going wrong and the match is made on that exact strand.
03
The curriculum your school is marking against
Match the plan to the grade: Grade 9 biology runs under MATATAG, Grade 10 finishes the older MELC content, and General Science only shows up once Senior High starts. The wrong match means practicing for an exam nobody is sitting.
04
The tutor owns the write-up and the reasoning
Practical work happens in the school laboratory. The tutor makes sure the learner understands what each experiment demonstrated and can write it up to the standard the teacher marks.
05
The work, committed in full
What we commit to is the work: DepEd competencies for the grade, covered properly, and free tutor replacement the moment you ask for a new pairing. A passing grade or an admission stays with the school.
06
The rate is already on this page
This page already shows the per-hour figure for whichever strand needs the tutor. The exact number for the learner's grade, and which tutor the match calls for, gets written down before you book anything.
Mastery Ladder
What changes as the grades go up
Three things shift underneath this subject: the language, the curriculum, and how much explaining a score requires
Kindergarten to Grade 3
Noticing, before naming
1/4
At this stage science is mostly careful observation: what happened, what changed, what might happen next. Tutoring is about protecting curiosity while building the habit of describing something accurately.
Subjects:
Living and non-living thingsWeather and the skyMaterials and their propertiesSimple change and cause
Focus Areas:
Describing what was seen, in order
Questions kept open long enough to think
Short sessions: attention is the constraint
Grades 4 to 6
Where the language of instruction changes
2/4
From Grade 4, the subject is still matter, energy and living things, but the words for it turn English overnight: photosynthesis, ecosystem, friction. A learner who scored well in Grade 3 can look like they lost Science in Grade 4, when the vocabulary simply outran them. Naming that early avoids a wasted year.
Subjects:
Body systemsMatter and its changesForce, motion and energyEarth and space
Focus Areas:
Technical vocabulary taught directly, term by term
Answers written out in full sentences
Investigations explained in the learner's own words first
Grades 7 to 10
MATATAG through Grade 9; MELC still for Grade 10
3/4
The four strands split apart here: biology, chemistry, physics, earth and space, each with its own vocabulary and its own style of question. Grade 9 sits on MATATAG; Grade 10 next door still works from the older MELC syllabus, a separate curriculum testing separate competencies, so a plan built for one grade rarely fits the other.
Subjects:
Cells, genetics and ecosystemsAtoms, compounds and reactionsMotion, energy and electricityEarth systems and climate
Focus Areas:
Reasoning written so it earns the partial credit
This year's Grade 10 exams are still built on pre-MATATAG competencies
Tutors matched to the exact science: biology, chemistry or physics
Grades 11 and 12
General Science
4/4
General Science sits inside the five core subjects of the Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum now, reaching every Grade 11 learner regardless of elective cluster, a learner who never touched the old STEM strand included. A plan built around 'am I STEM' answers a question the curriculum stopped asking in June 2026.
Subjects:
General ScienceScientific reasoning and evidenceData and measurementScience in public decisions
Focus Areas:
Anchored in the five-subject strengthened core that started June 2026
Support for elective clusters that lean scientific
Overlap with the science subtests in college entrance exams

What sessions actually cover
Picked from this list after the first session
Two learners in the same grade rarely need the same thing. One needs the content; the other understands it perfectly and cannot write an answer that scores.
What sessions actually cover
Module & Description
Topics Covered
01
Life science
Cells, body systems, heredity and ecosystems: the strand most learners find easiest to picture and hardest to keep straight, because the vocabulary load is enormous.
Cells and how they are organized
Human body systems
Heredity and variation
Ecosystems and interdependence
02
Chemistry
Matter, structure and reaction. The strand that punishes a shaky grasp of proportion most quickly, since a good deal of it turns into arithmetic with units attached.
Particles, elements and compounds
Mixtures and separation
Chemical change and evidence of it
Balancing and simple calculation
03
Physics
Force, motion, energy, electricity and waves. Where a learner's math either supports them or quietly stops them, which is why a session here sometimes turns into a math session.
Motion and its description
Force and the reason things move
Energy, work and transfer
Electricity, magnetism and waves
04
Earth and space
Weather, geology, the atmosphere, the solar system. Content close enough to daily life in this country that it is often the strand where a bored learner comes back.
Weather, typhoons and climate
Volcanoes, earthquakes and plates
The water and carbon cycles
Earth in the solar system
05
Investigation and method
How a question becomes a test, and what counts as evidence. Marked in every strand, taught in none of them specifically, and therefore skipped more often than any other item on this list.
Variables, controls and fair tests
Recording and tabulating results
Reading a graph before drawing a conclusion
Saying what the evidence does not show
06
Writing a science answer
A learner can hold the right idea and still not produce the sentence a marker is scanning for. 'Describe' and 'explain' unlock different scoring patterns, and getting that pattern onto the page is its own skill.
Reading what the command word is asking
Tracing the mechanism behind an effect
Using technical terms precisely
Labelling a diagram so it scores

Online Tutoring
Worldwide
Online sessions run over video with the screen shared. Plenty of Science material is something you point at, a labeled cell, a periodic table, a weather map, and the screen carries that pointing anywhere the call reaches.

In-Person Tutoring
At home, with diagrams drawn on paper
A home visit suits Science when diagrams need drawing and labeling side by side. Send your city and barangay, and we match the Science tutor who lives closest, for the grade the learner is in.
Who Should Join
Who asks for this
Four situations that want different sessions, and one that wants a different program
01
A learner whose grades fell at Grade 4
Often the language shift is the real cause. Worth checking before concluding that a learner has stopped being good at the subject: the fix is different, and much faster.
Good for:Vocabulary checked firstWritten answers practiced aloudWeekly until it settles
02
A learner who understands but underscores
Can explain it at the dinner table and loses points on paper. What is missing is the shape of an examinable answer. The science is already there.
Good for:Work from returned papersCommand words and scoring guidesEvery other week is often enough
03
A learner facing a dated exam
Something with a date on it: a quarterly assessment, an admission test, an entrance exam with a science section. The work is shaped by that date and stops once it has passed.
Good for:Timed practice under exam conditionsWeak strand identified, then drilledHigher frequency, fixed end date
04
A learner who wants more than the syllabus
Genuinely interested and under-fed by a class that has to move at the pace of thirty. The hour is better spent going further than going again.
Good for:Extension beyond the grade levelInvestigations they design themselvesA tutor with depth in that strand
05
A learner whose real problem is the math
Chemistry calculations and physics problems fail far more often on arithmetic and proportion than on the science. When the errors are arithmetic, the learner is placed in the Mathematics program, which closes exactly that gap.
Good for:Check whether the errors are arithmeticPlaced in the Mathematics programScience sessions added once the math holds
What goes wrong
Six ways Science review fails
Every one of these learners is putting in real hours. Science just rewards a narrower kind of effort than the hours they are spending
1
Revising by re-reading the textbook
Why it happens
Recognition feels like knowing. A page that looks familiar produces confidence without producing recall, which is why a learner can review for hours and blank in the exam.
How we fix it
Close the book and say it out loud, or write the answer cold. What comes back without the page in front of you is what you actually have.
2
Memorizing definitions without the mechanism
Why it happens
Definitions answer what something is; Science papers mostly ask why something happens. A learner who has the words and not the chain of cause loses the points that carry the most weight.
How we fix it
Learn the sequence of causes. If you can say what causes what, in order, the definition writes itself.
3
Treating diagrams as decoration
Why it happens
Labelling carries points of its own, and a diagram copied without being understood earns the marks of a drawing.
How we fix it
Redraw it from memory and label it before checking. The parts that go missing are the parts not yet learned.
4
Skipping the arithmetic inside chemistry and physics
Why it happens
A learner can understand a reaction perfectly and still lose the score to a decimal point or a unit. The science was never the problem, so nobody looks there.
How we fix it
Separate the two when reviewing a wrong answer: was the method wrong, or the sum? They need different work, and only one of them is science.
5
Revising all four strands evenly
Why it happens
It feels fair and it leaves the weakest strand exactly where it was. Time spread evenly is time spent mostly on what is already known.
How we fix it
Find the weak strand from a returned paper, then weight the hours towards it deliberately, even though it is the least pleasant one to study.
6
Waiting for the quarterly exam to find out
Why it happens
Science is cumulative within a strand; a gap in particles quietly costs points in every later chemistry topic. By the time a quarterly assessment reveals it, weeks of content have been built on top.
How we fix it
Treat every graded seatwork as an early signal. A gap caught in the first quarter takes one session to close; the same gap in the fourth quarter is months of content behind.
A returned quiz shows most of this within one session; a tutor reading the wrong answers can usually spot which pattern is at work. That reading is most of what the first hour does.
One hour, matched to the strand in trouble
The rate above is per hour, matched to whichever of the four strands needs a tutor; a home visit costs differently from an online session, and Metro Manila differently from the provinces.
From
₱400 / hour
Home visit, Metro Manila
₱550 / hour
Online
₱400 / hour
Home visit, provincial areas
₱400 / hour
Per hour, one tutor with one learner. Home visits run at least 1.5 hours. Packages: 12 hours at 5% off, 24 hours at 10% off.
Most learners settle into one hour a week to keep a strand from sliding further behind, and step that up in the weeks before a quarterly exam before stepping back down again once it passes. Twelve hours booked together cut the per-hour rate by 5%, twenty-four hours by 10%, and the exact figure for that grade and tutor match goes in writing before you book anything.
Common Questions
What Science learners ask
Answered before anything is arranged
I was good at Science until Grade 4. What happened?
+
Check the language first. English becomes the medium of instruction for Science from Grade 4, so the year a learner's grades drop is frequently the year the subject stopped being taught in the language they think in. The science has not necessarily got harder: the reading has. It is a common and fixable situation, and it is worth ruling in or out before deciding a learner has lost the subject.
Which curriculum will you follow?
+
The grade in front of us decides it. A Grade 9 session works from MATATAG, which trimmed the old K-9 science competencies to a smaller, steadier set. A Grade 10 session this year still works the pre-MATATAG list, because MATATAG does not reach Grade 10 until SY 2027-2028. Past Grade 10, the four strands, life science, chemistry, physics, earth and space, fold into one subject called General Science, one of the five core subjects the Strengthened SHS Curriculum requires.
Can you do experiments?
+
Practical lab work belongs to the school, which has the laboratory, the fume hood and the apparatus. What a tutor does is go through an experiment the learner has already done: what it was testing, why the result came out as it did, and how to write it up so it earns points. For some topics a simulation on screen helps the learner see the idea move before the next school lab.
The teacher goes too fast for me. Does tutoring fix that?
+
It changes what happens to the parts that were missed. A class of forty moves at the pace of the syllabus, and anything not caught the first time stays uncaught. A one-to-one hour can go back to the specific thing that was skipped, which is usually much narrower than it feels from the outside, often one idea inside one chapter.
Should we ask for a biology tutor or a science tutor?
+
Tell us the strand and we will match on it. Science is one subject name covering four quite different bodies of knowledge, and depth in one does not transfer. If the trouble is in chemistry, a tutor whose strength is life science is a poor use of your money, however good they are.
We were told the STEM strand decides the science load. Is that still true?
+
It stopped being true the day Grade 11 started under the new curriculum, in June 2026. General Science is one of five subjects every Senior High learner now studies, whatever elective cluster they picked, so asking whether a student is 'STEM' says nothing about whether they are taking Science anymore. Everyone is.
What does it cost?
+
The per-hour rate is above: lower for a home visit outside Metro Manila, and the same lower figure for online. A vocabulary gap that opened at Grade 4 is often worth one hour a week to close; a strand under quarterly-exam pressure is worth doubling until the date passes. How many of those hours a week the situation needs is what moves the total. Twelve hours booked together cut the per-hour rate by 5%, and twenty-four hours by 10%. Tell us the grade and which strand is struggling, and the exact figure for that pairing goes in writing before you book anything.
I understand it when someone explains, then forget by the next day. Why?
+
Because following an explanation and being able to produce it are different things, and only the second is examined. Understanding in the moment is genuine: it just has not been turned into anything retrievable. The fix is making the learner do the retrieving, cold, a day or two later. That feels harder for them and it is the part that actually sticks.
Should I memorize or understand?
+
Both, and understanding carries most of the weight. Some things are genuinely arbitrary and have to be learned: symbols, units, names of parts. Most of the points, though, go to explaining why something happens, and no amount of memorizing produces that. A useful test: if a question could be answered by someone who had memorized the glossary and understood nothing, it is a low-point question.
Is it worth tutoring Science if the grades are already passing?
+
Yes, and a passing grade is the best moment to start, because the plan can aim higher from day one. A learner passing by memorizing will meet a ceiling around the point where questions start asking for reasoning, and the tutor moves them past it before it shows on a report card. A learner passing by understanding is ready for enrichment: harder problems, a head start on next year's topics, or practice for a science quiz bee. Send a returned paper and the tutor reads which of the two it is in a single pass.

Programs that sit beside this one for the same learner
Two things settle it: which grade, and which of the four strands needs the help, plus when the learner can realistically fit a session in. Whoever picks up the message confirms the exact rate for that pairing and lines up a tutor once you decide to proceed.
