English Tutor Philippines for the subject that carries the others

English tutor for one learner, anywhere in the Philippines, and the first session separates reading, writing, grammar and speaking, since one grade hides which of the four is slipping. From Grade 4 English also carries Math and Science, so a learner behind here is quietly behind in more places than the English column shows.

What is

English tutoring

One tutor and one learner working across the four things the subject is actually assessed on: reading and understanding, writing, grammar and usage, and speaking. Built on the DepEd competencies for the grade, and on the learner's own returned work, which is where the specific weakness shows itself.

Key Points

  • Kindergarten through Grade 12, including Effective Communication in Senior High
  • Reading, writing, grammar and speaking treated as four separate skills
  • From Grade 4, English also carries Math and Science, so the gain does not stay in one subject
  • This school year's split: K-9 English already follows MATATAG, but Grade 10 English is held on the older MELC list through SY 2027-2028
  • The hourly rate follows the grade level and whichever skill turns out weak
Learning Formats

How a session is arranged

Identical tutor and plan; choose on logistics alone

  1. At your home

Reading aloud, being corrected gently, and writing under someone's eye are all easier in person. Ninety minutes gives room to move through two of the four skills in one sitting, a passage read and then a paragraph written about it. For learners who are self-conscious about speaking, a familiar room does more work than any method.

    90-120 minutes
    • Reading aloud without an audience of classmates
    • Drafts marked as they are written
    • No commute after school
  2. Online

Live video with a shared document, so a paragraph can be rewritten together in real time. Speaking practice works well over video: the learner is talking to one person, which is less exposing than a classroom.

    60-90 minutes
    • Shared document for drafting and redrafting
    • Conversation practice with one listener
    • Reaches every province

How we work on English

Commitments we can keep

  • We find out which of the four skills is the problem

Reading, writing, grammar and speaking are separate abilities reported as one grade. Tutoring that does not separate them ends up spending the hour on whatever the tutor prefers teaching.

  • Treated as the language the school runs on

From Grade 4 the Math and Science a learner is taught arrive in English. We work the vocabulary those subjects need right alongside the words on the English syllabus.

  • Their own writing is the material

The essay that came back covered in corrections, the comprehension paper with wrong answers circled, the composition scored low. These show exactly where this learner's writing and reading break down, more than any generic worksheet can.

  • Speaking practiced where it is safe to be wrong

A learner who will not read aloud in class will often read aloud to one person. That is the entire reason one-to-one works for this subject.

  • Coaching you can hold us to

Report-card grades, passing scores and admission decisions are the school's to give. What is on offer is the coaching that builds toward them, and a replacement tutor at no cost the moment you want someone who reaches this particular reader better.

  • A rate that starts on this page and ends in writing

The figure above already reflects grade level, home visit or online, and area. Which of the four skills needs the work, and how many sessions a week that calls for, move the total further. Once those two things are known, we write the learner's number down and send it over. Nothing is booked before you have seen it in black and white.

Progression Path

How the subject changes shape

The demand moves from decoding, to explaining, to arguing

  1. Kindergarten to Grade 3

    Learning to read

Sounds, words, sentences, and the point at which text stops being a puzzle. Nothing later in schooling is as load-bearing as this band, and nothing is as recoverable when it is caught here, years before Grade 7.

    Subjects

Letter sounds and blendingSight words and fluencySimple comprehensionSentence writing

    Focus Areas

    • Accuracy first, then speed, then expression
    • Reading aloud daily, in short bursts
    • Confidence protected: a reluctant reader is hard to restart
  2. Grades 4 to 6

Reading to learn, and the language turns over

English becomes the medium for Math and Science from Grade 4, which changes what a weak reader can access. This is the band where the same pupil appears to decline in three subjects at once, and the common cause is one.

    Subjects

Comprehension beyond the literalVocabulary in contextParagraph writingGrammar and usage

    Focus Areas

    • Inference, where the answer is nowhere on the page
    • Subject vocabulary, since it now arrives in English
    • Writing that answers the question asked
  3. Grades 7 to 10

Grade 9 argument-writing follows MATATAG; Grade 10 still follows MELC

Reading becomes essay writing, literary analysis, and arguments a reader can push back on. The mark now goes to how well an opinion is defended; simply holding one no longer earns it. Grade 9 runs the MATATAG version of this skill; Grade 10 still runs the older MELC list, which matters when planning toward an assessment.

    Subjects

Literature and interpretationEssay and compositionResearch and referencingAdvanced grammar

    Focus Areas

    • Structure taught explicitly, paragraph by paragraph
    • Evidence quoted and explained
    • Grade 10 argument work still follows the older MELC list
  4. Grades 11 and 12

    Effective Communication

Grade 11 no longer has a subject called English. Effective Communication, or Mabisang Komunikasyon, is one of five core subjects every Senior High learner takes, in any elective cluster or track. The syllabus goes further than the old subject: a presentation, a workplace email and a formal essay are judged on how well they reach the reader they were written for, and on grammar.

    Subjects

Effective CommunicationAcademic and workplace writingPresenting and speakingReading dense and unfamiliar text

    Focus Areas

    • Purpose and audience shaping every piece
    • Written work that holds up outside school
    • Overlap with the English subtests in entrance exams
Program Curriculum

The four skills, worked separately

A single English grade hides which of these is the problem: the first session separates them

Almost nobody is weak at all four. Finding which one is dragging the grade is most of the diagnosis, and it changes what the sessions look like entirely.

  1. Understanding what a passage says, and then what it implies. The second half is where most points are lost from Grade 4 onward, because the answer is no longer sitting in the text.

    Topics covered
    • Finding what is stated, quickly and accurately
    • Inference and reading between lines
    • Author's purpose and tone
    • Handling an unfamiliar passage without panic

Where this is available

  1. Online Tutoring

Wherever a video call can hold up for reading and writing together

Live video with a shared document, so writing is drafted and revised together, live. Speaking practice with one listener is often easier over video than in a room.

    Shared document for drafting
Works on a phone or tablet
Sessions hold through a storm week

    Timezone: Philippine Standard Time (UTC+8)

  2. In-Person Tutoring

At home, reading aloud at the table

Reading aloud without a screen in the way is why home sessions matter most for a nervous reader, and every book in the house becomes session material. Share your address, and we match the English tutor who lives nearest you.

Who It Is For

Who this is for

Four different problems that all arrive described as needing English tutoring

A learner who reads slowly or reluctantly

Avoids reading, takes a long time over a passage, or loses the thread by the end of it. The earlier this is worked on the cheaper it is, and it is worth acting on before it becomes an opinion the learner holds about themselves.

Recommended:

Fluency before comprehensionShort daily reading between sessionsWeekly to start

A learner whose other subjects are slipping

Grades falling in Science or in Math word problems while English looks merely mediocre. Frequently one problem showing up in three columns, and worth testing before hiring three tutors.

Recommended:

Vocabulary across subjectsWord problems read as languageCoordinate with the Math or Science plan

A learner who cannot write it down

Bright in discussion, thin on paper. The gap is structure and practice at getting an argument out in order. Intelligence and effort are already present.

Recommended:

Planning taught explicitlyDrafting and redrafting the same pieceWork from returned essays

A learner preparing for an entrance exam

English and reading comprehension carry weight in every major college entrance exam and in Senior High entrance tests. A fixed block of work with an end date, planned from the paper backwards.

Recommended:

What moves the rate for English tutoring

The figure above is where it starts; grade level, the skill being repaired, and where the session happens carry it the rest of the way

From

₱400 / hour

Home visit, Metro Manila₱550 / hour
Online₱400 / hour
Home visit, provincial areas₱400 / hour

Per hour, one tutor with one learner. Home visits run at least 1.5 hours. Packages: 12 hours at 5% off, 24 hours at 10% off.

Grade level moves the total most: a Kindergarten reader working on letter sounds calls for a different kind of hour than a Senior High learner drafting for Effective Communication. Where the session happens moves it too: a home visit inside Metro Manila, a home visit further into the provinces, and an online session each sit at their own rate. A learner cramming vocabulary and comprehension ahead of an entrance exam usually needs more than one session a week; a reader working on fluency alone can often start with one. A package of hours booked together, twelve or twenty-four at a time, comes in below paying for each session on its own.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

Worth answering before you decide

I speak English fine but get low grades in it. How?

Conversation and academic English are different skills. A learner can be fluent at home and still struggle to infer an author's purpose, structure an argument, or use the register an exam expects. This is common enough that it is usually the first thing we check, and it means the sessions look nothing like conversation practice: they look like reading and writing work.
