Araling Panlipunan Tutor for the learner who memorized everything and got a 78

Araling Panlipunan tutor sessions train the part DepEd grades from Grade 1 to Grade 10: why something happened. Learners describe flashcards for dates, timelines redrawn twice, and a grade in the high seventies anyway. A learner who practices saying why, out loud and then in writing, climbs out of that plateau.

Quick Guide

What is Araling Panlipunan tutoring?

A tutor sits with a single learner across the DepEd Araling Panlipunan curriculum: Philippine history, world history, geography, civics and economics.

Sessions center on what actually earns marks, tracing a cause, weighing a source, and constructing an argument that survives a follow-up question, and each plan is drawn from what came back marked on the learner's last paper.

Key Points

  • Grades 1 through 10 on the DepEd Araling Panlipunan curriculum
  • Graded on explanation and argument far more than on recall
  • Carries one of the heaviest reading loads of any subject at this level
  • Kasaysayan and Ekonomiks stay on MELC for Grade 10; earlier grades already sit on MATATAG, full rollout due SY 2027-2028
  • Hourly rate set by grade level, and by home visit versus online
Learning Formats

Two ways to run it

Same tutor and plan either way; pick on what your week can hold

  1. At your home

Suits a subject with this much reading. A map, a textbook and a returned paper can be open at once, and a tutor sitting beside the page can see where a learner stopped taking anything in. Where the learner is younger, the 90-minute visit runs as several short passages read aloud with a talk-through after each one, since reading stamina is what limits a young learner at this age.

    90 to 120 minutes
    • Maps and sources spread out together
    • Essay drafts marked as they are written
    • No commute after a full school day
  2. Online

On a video call, the tutor shares a document on screen and marks it up live, whether that is a colonial-era map, a primary source, or a Senior High timeline stretching across a century. The lesson runs the same way regardless of which town the learner is calling in from.

    60-90 minutes
    • Maps, timelines and sources shared on screen
    • Shared document for essay work
    • Reaches every town with a steady connection
Program Strengths

How we teach this subject

Six principles for a subject built on argument

  • We aim at what the paper grades

Explanation and argument, the skills the paper grades. A learner already working hard does not need more hours; they need the effort pointed at the thing that earns points.

  • Reading load treated as a real obstacle

This subject asks for more sustained reading than any other at this level. When the chapter itself is the obstacle, the tutor builds reading stamina inside the AP text, so history lands once the pages stop being a wall.

  • We ask which language the paper is in

AP runs in English at some schools, entirely in Filipino at others. A learner weak in formal Filipino can lose marks on a Filipino paper for reasons unrelated to their grasp of history, so we confirm the language first.

  • We teach the argument, and the learner reaches the verdict

Contemporary issues in this subject are genuinely contested. A tutor's job is to teach a learner to reason from evidence and to argue a case they disagree with, while the verdict stays the learner's own.

  • A promise about the work

The promise covers a tutor's full effort on every AP lesson, and a free tutor replacement the day you ask for it. The grade itself is the teacher's to give, and the sessions aim every hour at it.

  • Grade level sets where the rate lands

Marking a Senior High essay built from primary sources is not the same task as reading a short passage with a Grade 2 learner, and AP's hourly rate is set by grade level for that reason. Give us the grade level, home or online, and where you are, and the exact rate is confirmed in writing for that learner before an AP session goes on the calendar.

Progression Path

How the subject changes as the grades go up

From your street, to your country, to the question of what the evidence supports

  1. Grades 1 to 3

    The world close to home

Family, school, neighborhood and community: the subject starts with what a child can see and works outward. The trouble at this stage is almost never the content; it is reading long enough to reach the end of a passage.

    Subjects

    Focus Areas

    • Reading stamina before content
    • Talking about what was read
    • Short sessions: attention is the limit here
  2. Grades 4 to 6

The Philippines, and the reading load arrives

Geography, then Philippine history end to end. The volume of text jumps sharply in this band, and a learner whose reading is still effortful will start to fall behind in a subject that had nothing to do with reading a year earlier.

    • Vocabulary that the textbook assumes
  3. Grades 7 to 10

MATATAG covers Grades 7 to 9; Grade 10 stays on MELC

Asia, the wider world, economics and contemporary issues, with sources to read and positions to defend. This is where memorizing stops working entirely: the questions ask what the evidence supports, and a learner who has only learned the answer has nothing to say.

  4. Senior High

Known in Filipino as Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino

The Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum made this one of five subjects nobody can opt out of, regardless of track or elective cluster. Because scoring rewards a claim built on evidence over a recited fact, a learner who spent Junior High memorizing dates notices the shift in the very first graded essay.

Content Map

What sessions actually work on

Chosen from the returned papers, weakest skill first

Two learners on the same chapter rarely need the same thing. One cannot hold the content; the other holds all of it and cannot turn it into an answer that scores.

Module 01

Kasaysayan

Philippine and world history as a chain of causes, each one linked to the next. A learner who can say why something followed something else has the dates for free; the reverse is not true.

  • Cause, consequence and sequence
  • Turning points and why they turned
  • Continuity: what did not change
  • Timelines the learner builds

Module 02

Reading a source

Who wrote this, when, for whom, and what they wanted the reader to think. The single most transferable skill in the subject and the one most often skipped for lack of time.

  • Primary against secondary
  • Author, audience and purpose
  • What a source does not say
  • Two sources that disagree

Module 03

Heograpiya

Maps, regions, resources and climate, and the habit of asking what the land has to do with the history. Often the part a struggling learner enjoys most, which makes it a useful place to restart from.

  • Reading a map properly
  • Regions and their resources
  • Climate, hazards and settlement
  • Geography as an explanation

Module 04

Ekonomiks at pamahalaan

Economics and civics, where the subject turns abstract and quietly starts requiring numeracy. A learner who is shaky with percentages will struggle here for reasons that look like disinterest.

  • Supply, demand and price
  • Government and its branches
  • Rights and responsibilities
  • Reading a chart before drawing a conclusion

Module 05

Writing an AP answer

Nothing about this step shows until a marked essay comes back. Understanding why an event happened and turning that into a scoring answer are separate abilities, and AP only grades the second one.

  • What the command word is asking
  • Claim, evidence, explanation
  • Turning a bare cause into a full explanation
  • Finishing the essay inside the time

Module 06

Contemporary issues without the shouting

Current affairs arrive in this subject and they are genuinely contested. A tutor's job is to teach a learner to argue from evidence and reach a position of their own.

  • Separating a fact from a reading of it
  • Arguing a case you disagree with
  • Judging a source's interest
  • Disagreeing without abandoning evidence

Who It Is For

Who this is for

Five AP situations we see often, and one that needs a different subject

A learner who memorizes and still scores average

Studies hard, remembers plenty, lands in the seventies. The effort is real and aimed at the wrong target, which is a far better problem to have than the opposite.

Recommended:

Work from returned papersExplanation practiced out loud firstWeekly until the pattern breaks

A learner buried by the reading

The text volume in Grades 4 to 6 climbs faster than in any other subject. A learner whose reading is still effortful falls behind here first, and it looks like a history problem.

Recommended:

Reading stamina addressed directlyNote-making that is not copyingConsider reading support alongside

A Grade 12 learner meeting it as a core subject

Every Grade 11 learner now takes Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino, any track, even those who counted on Junior High being the end of it. The jump into defending a claim from evidence hits immediately.

Recommended:

Argument structure taught explicitlyTimed essay practiceCoordinate with any entrance review

A learner who finds it pointless

Common, and usually a symptom of how the subject was taught. A subject taught as a list of things to remember is genuinely dull; the same material taught as a set of arguments frequently is not.

Recommended:

Start from a question worth answeringSources they can argue withShort run, honestly reviewed

A learner whose real problem is Filipino

Some schools run AP entirely in Filipino, textbook and exam questions both. A learner weak in academic Filipino can turn in a poor AP paper for reasons unrelated to historical knowledge, so it is worth confirming which language the paper is graded in.

6

common pitfalls

What goes wrong

Six ways hard work goes unrewarded in AP

Each of these is a learner doing something effortful that the subject does not grade

01

Memorizing dates and names as the main study method

Why it happens

It feels like studying, it is measurable, and it produces a learner who can answer the smallest questions on the paper and none of the large ones. Recall is worth the fewest points in the subject.

Our solution

Study by asking why after every fact. If the learner can explain the cause, the date attaches itself; the reverse almost never happens.

02

Answering 'explain' with 'describe'

Why it happens

The learner writes what happened, at length and accurately, because that is what they know. The question asked why it happened, and a correct description earns almost nothing against it.

Our solution

Teach the command words directly, then rewrite one past answer for each of them. It is a fast fix once somebody names it.

03

Copying notes word for word

Why it happens

Transcribing the textbook fills a notebook and leaves nothing behind. The learner has been busy for an hour without deciding what mattered, which is the part that does the learning.

Our solution

Close the book before writing anything. What comes out is what was understood; what did not come out is the review list.

04

Treating every source as equally true

Why it happens

Sources are read as plain information, when each is somebody's account written for somebody, so a learner has no way to handle two that disagree, which is exactly what the harder questions hand them.

Our solution

Ask who wrote it and what they wanted, every time, until the question becomes automatic.

05

Skipping the numbers in Ekonomiks

Why it happens

Percentages, graphs and simple proportion sit inside the economics strand, and a learner shaky in Math avoids those questions without ever saying so. It reads as disinterest.

Our solution

Check whether the avoided questions are the numerical ones. If they are, the repair is partly a Math repair, and it is quicker than it sounds.

06

Writing until the time runs out

Why it happens

Essays get planned while the first sentence is being written, so the argument arrives on the last line or not at all, and the strongest point is the one the learner never reached.

Our solution

Two minutes of planning before writing, practiced under a clock until it feels like time saved.

Hand a tutor one graded AP essay and the diagnosis usually takes minutes: which of these six is producing the low mark becomes obvious from the marginal comments alone. Untangling it is the real work of that first hour together.

What an hour of AP tutoring costs

The rate moves with grade level; home visits are priced by area, and online sits on its own line

From

₱400 / hour

Home visit, Metro Manila₱550 / hour
Online₱400 / hour
Home visit, provincial areas₱400 / hour

Per hour, one tutor with one learner. Home visits run at least 1.5 hours. Packages: 12 hours at 5% off, 24 hours at 10% off.

Grade level moves the rate the most: marking a Grade 10 timed essay and reading a Grade 3 passage aloud ask a tutor for different things. Home visits are priced by area, Metro Manila and provincial rates sit in the table above, and online carries its own rate for a learner anywhere in the country. Breaking a memorization habit in AP usually takes several weekly sessions, which is where the 12-hour or 24-hour package tends to fit without paying for hours nobody needed.

Common Questions

What learners ask about AP

Usually starting with the same frustration

I study hard for AP and still get average grades. Why?

Almost always because the studying is aimed at recall and the paper is grading explanation. Memorizing dates, names and places feels like work and is measurable, so it is what a diligent learner does, and it answers the smallest questions on the paper. The larger questions ask why something happened and what the evidence supports, and those cannot be memorized in advance. Redirecting the same effort usually moves the grade faster than adding hours to it.

Is AP just memorization?

No, and believing it is may be the single most expensive misunderstanding in the subject. Facts matter as the raw material of every answer. What earns points is using them: explaining a cause, weighing a source, building a claim somebody could disagree with and supporting it anyway. That is also why the subject transfers: those are the same moves an entrance-exam reading section asks for.

Which language will the sessions be in?

Whatever language the learner's actual AP paper is graded in, and confirming that is one of the first questions we ask. Some schools deliver and test the subject in English, others in Filipino, and a learner without strong academic Filipino can score poorly on a Filipino-language paper for reasons unconnected to their historical knowledge. Sorting that out in the first session keeps an entire term from being spent fixing a problem that was never there.

The AP reading load feels like too much. Is that an AP problem?

Frequently not. The text volume climbs sharply from Grade 4, faster than in other subjects, so a learner whose reading is still effortful meets the wall here first. It presents as a history problem and is a reading problem. The first session shows which it is, and when reading is the root, a reading program runs alongside the AP hours and lifts both.

What happens in Senior High?

DepEd folded Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino into the Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum's short list of subjects nobody skips, whichever track or cluster a Grade 11 learner has chosen. Compared with Junior High AP, the grading here rewards a fully built, evidence-based argument far more heavily, and a learner who relied on memorization up to this point will notice that difference the moment the first essay comes back.

Will the tutor tell me what to think about current issues?

The tutor teaches the learner to reach a position of their own and defend it with evidence, which is precisely what the AP rubric rewards. The contemporary-issues material in AP is genuinely disputed territory, and the marks go to reasoning: weighing a source, building a case the learner may personally disagree with, and holding it up under questioning. Sessions train that skill on the very issues the class is covering, and every conclusion reached stays with the learner.

How can I review AP at home between sessions?

Get someone to ask you why. What moves this subject is being made to explain, and anyone can do the asking: a classmate, a sibling, a friend on a call. Close the book, explain why something happened, and have them stop you whenever the answer turns into a list of events. If you cannot explain it out loud, you cannot explain it on the paper either, and the gaps you hit are your review list. The person asking needs no history at all.

AP feels like a textbook nobody cares about. Does that change?

Often, and usually faster than learners expect, because it is more often a symptom than an attitude. Taught as a list of things to remember, the subject genuinely is dull. Taught as a set of arguments about why a country turned out the way it did, the same material tends to hold a teenager who had written it off. A short run with a review at the end shows it quickly, before any longer commitment.

Does AP help with anything else?

The reading and argument work transfers more than most subjects do. Comprehension under time pressure, judging a source, and building a claim with support are the same skills the English papers and the reading sections of entrance exams ask for. That transfer comes as a bonus on top of the AP grade itself.

How often should sessions run?

Weekly while a study pattern is being rebuilt, then on a lighter rhythm once it holds. When the study method is the target, a focused block moves the effort onto the way Araling Panlipunan is assessed, from reading a map or a timeline to explaining a cause, and a check follows the next quarterly assessment.

Will you help with the project or the essay?

A tutor works alongside the learner on the project or essay: drafts, outlines and returned essays all come into session because each one shows exactly where an argument stops holding together. Finished work handed in under the learner's name is off the table, since it buys one good grade and leaves nothing learned for the essay after it.

How much does it cost?

Marking a Senior High essay built from primary sources takes more from a tutor than reading a short passage with a Grade 2 learner, which is why AP's rate is set by grade level. Metro Manila home visits, provincial home visits, and online sessions each carry their own rate in the table above. Tell us the grade level and where the sessions will happen, and we put the AP rate for that grade in writing before the first lesson is scheduled.

Send us one returned AP paper

Send the grade level, the paper that scored lower than expected, and the language it was answered in. A tutor actually reads it, then tells you plainly whether the trouble is the historical content, the reading load, or the writing itself, along with the hourly rate and someone to meet.
