SHS Strand Tutor Philippines: what replaced STEM, ABM, HUMSS and GAS

SHS strand tutors in the Philippines now work inside the tracks that replaced STEM, ABM, HUMSS and GAS: from June 2026, Grade 11 runs on the Academic or Technical-Professional track with elective clusters. Eduline tutors work on the core subject or cluster a learner is actually enrolled in, one to one.

Quick Guide

What is The Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum?

DepEd's overhaul of Grades 11 and 12, in force this school year.

STEM, ABM, HUMSS and GAS stopped being fixed choices; learners now build their own electives instead, grouped under two tracks, Academic or Technical-Professional, in place of the old four. The setup was trialed across 841 schools over SY 2025-2026, then became standard everywhere Senior High is taught, with Grade 11 starting it off in June 2026.

Key Points

  • Four strands abolished; elective clusters put in their place
  • Four tracks became two: Academic and Technical-Professional, with Sports and Arts & Design folded in
  • Five core subjects now apply to every learner, whichever track they are on
  • Binding across SY 2026-2027, from Grade 11's start in June 2026
  • This page is an explanation. Read it, then decide whether you need anything more.

If you want help after reading this

The explanation is free. What follows from it, if anything, is ordinary subject tutoring

  1. Duration: 60-90 minutes

    Online

Where most Senior High support happens, because the schedule is fixed and the commute is real. If a core subject turns out to be the actual problem, this is usually the practical way to work on it.

    • Evening slots without travel
    • Shared workspace for working through problems
    • Anywhere with a usable connection
  2. Duration: 90-120 minutes

    At your home

Some learners want the subject list read line by line with someone beside them, or a worksheet corrected on the spot. Each home visit is arranged for one learner at a time, with a tutor from your area.

    • Written work corrected on the spot
    • A fixed slot after class each week
    • A tutor from your part of the city
Program Strengths

Why this page exists at all

And what it deliberately does not do

  • The search was going to happen anyway

The strand names will sit in search bars for years after DepEd stopped using them. This page meets every one of those searches with the structure that is actually in force.

  • No invented conversion table

There is no chart mapping STEM to a cluster, because the strands were replaced outright. A clean four-row table would be the most shareable false thing on this website.

  • Your school's list beats anything written here

Electives are assembled school by school. Whatever this page says in general, the document that governs a learner's Senior High is the subject list their own school issued.

  • Partners to the guidance office

We explain the structure in full, and the choice of track, cluster and career stays with the learner and the school's guidance staff, who know the local options best.

  • Every answer traced to its source

How universities weigh clusters in admissions is theirs to publish, so this page sends you to their offices for it, and keeps every other fact tied to DepEd's own orders.

  • Nothing is being sold on this page

If reading this is all you needed, that is a good outcome. Where a core subject or an elective genuinely needs support, the rate sits further down this page, and it is set out in writing for the learner's specific subject before a single session is booked.

Mastery Ladder

What to do with the advice you were already given

Four versions of the same conversation, depending on which word you were handed

  1. You were told STEM

The math and science did not go anywhere
    1/4

The strands were replaced outright, so no single cluster carries the STEM name forward. What is true is narrower and more useful: General Mathematics and General Science are now core subjects for every Senior High learner, on both tracks. The quantitative load spread to every learner.

    Subjects:

General Mathematics, now core for allGeneral Science, now core for allElectives the school assemblesNo strand to be admitted into

    Focus Areas:

    • Stop looking for the equivalent strand; there is not one
    • Ask the school what its clusters actually contain
    • Course requirements are set by each university
  2. You were told ABM

Business subjects became electives to choose
    2/4

ABM used to bundle accounting, business math and finance into one enrollment. That bundle broke apart: financial math now sits inside General Mathematics, which every Grade 11 learner takes, and any remaining business content depends on the elective cluster the school runs.

    Subjects:

Business and financial math inside the coreSchool-assembled electivesLife and Career Skills as a core subjectNo ABM admission to prepare for

    Focus Areas:

    • Ask the school for its actual elective list
    • Do not assume another school's clusters match
    • Core subjects apply regardless of interest
  3. You were told HUMSS

The humanities are in the core now
    3/4

What made HUMSS distinctive (close reading, essay writing, weighing an argument) now lives inside Pag-aaral ng Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino and Effective Communication, the two core subjects carried by every Grade 11 and 12 learner, on either track.

    Subjects:

Pag-aaral ng Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino, taught in FilipinoEffective CommunicationSchool-assembled electivesNo HUMSS strand to enter

    Focus Areas:

    • Argument and evidence are examined for everyone
    • Ask what the school's clusters contain
    • Direct guidance questions to the school's guidance office
  4. You were told GAS, or told nothing

The default that no longer needs to exist
    4/4

GAS existed largely as the general option for learners not committing to a specialization. Since electives are now assembled one by one, that role is built into the structure, and there is no general strand left to fall into.

    Subjects:

The five core subjectsElectives chosen individuallyAcademic or Technical-ProfessionalNo default strand

    Focus Areas:

    • Undecided is a normal position with room to move
    • The school's subject list is the real document
    • Decide with the school guidance office
Learning Phases

The change, in the order it matters

Four facts, and the question universities will settle

This page carries no table converting old strands into new clusters, by design. The strands were replaced by electives that learners assemble school by school, so the subject list each school issues is the document that maps a learner's path.

  1. Four strands became none

    4 topics

STEM, ABM, HUMSS and GAS are not part of the structure any more. Learners do not apply into one, are not placed in one, and do not graduate from one.

    • No strand to choose
    • No strand admission
    • Flexible elective clusters instead
    • Clusters assembled by each school
  2. Four tracks became two

    4 topics

Academic and Technical-Professional. The former Sports track and Arts & Design track were folded into this structure.

    • Academic track
    • Technical-Professional (TechPro)
    • Sports and Arts & Design folded in
    • The track is the real choice now
  3. Five core subjects, for everybody

    4 topics

The change with the most practical consequence for learners. Every Senior High learner carries all five, on either track, whatever electives they take.

    • Effective Communication / Mabisang Komunikasyon
    • Life and Career Skills
    • General Mathematics
    • General Science, alongside Pag-aaral ng Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino
  4. When it took effect

    4 topics

The trial ran in 841 schools during SY 2025-2026. Full rollout started with Grade 11 in June 2026, opening SY 2026-2027, and it governs every Senior High classroom now.

    • 841 pilot schools in SY 2025-2026
    • Full implementation SY 2026-2027
    • Grade 11 first, from June 2026
    • Guidance written before then is stale
  5. What your own school decides

    4 topics

Which electives exist, how they are grouped, and what is actually offered are school-level decisions. Two schools in the same city can differ, and neither is wrong.

    • Ask for the subject list in writing
    • Do not assume another school's list applies
    • Clusters differ between schools
    • The list is the document that matters
  6. The question universities will settle

    4 topics

How university admissions offices will weigh a learner's elective clusters is being set by each university for the years ahead, and the answer comes from their own admissions pages and offices.

    • University admissions practice is still settling
    • Ask the universities you are aiming at
    • The school's guidance office for the local picture
    • Each university's own published rules
Learning Modes

Where support is available, if you decide you want it

  1. Online Tutoring

Anywhere in the Philippines with working internet

The explanation on this page is open to every reader. When a core subject turns out to be the real difficulty, online sessions fit around a Senior High class schedule from any province.

    Evening slots without travel
Shared workspace for working through problems
Simple to intensify before an assessment

    Timezone: Philippine Standard Time (UTC+8)

  2. In-Person Tutoring

At home, for Senior High core subjects

A home visit suits a Grade 11 learner working through General Mathematics or General Science problem by problem at the table. Write in by email with your location, and the reply introduces the Senior High tutor who covers it.

The rate for whichever subject turns out to be the problem

One tutor working with one Grade 11 or 12 learner, in any of the five core subjects or an elective cluster the school is running. A home visit costs more in Metro Manila than in a provincial area; online holds one flat rate nationwide. Learners sorting out a subject after this kind of curriculum shift usually book weekly through a grading period, which is where the 12- and 24-hour packages apply.

From

₱500 / hour

Home visit, Metro Manila₱700 / hour
Online₱500 / hour
Home visit, provincial areas₱500 / hour

Per hour, one tutor with one learner. Home visits run at least 1.5 hours. Packages: 12 hours at 5% off, 24 hours at 10% off.

The exact rate follows the subject the explanation above points toward, and it arrives in writing together with the tutor's plan.

FAQ

The questions people actually arrive with

Answered plainly, with the source of each answer named

Is the STEM strand really gone?

Yes, completely. The Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum retired all four names at once: STEM, ABM, HUMSS and GAS are gone from the enrollment form. A Grade 11 learner now assembles elective clusters instead, sorted under Academic or Technical-Professional in place of the old four tracks. DepEd trialed the change in 841 schools during SY 2025-2026 and made it standard once SY 2026-2027 opened in June 2026. There is no strand left to pick, so the old question no longer applies.
