English for speakers of other languages

ESL Tutoring Philippines, one to one, for the gap the group class passes over

ESL tutoring in the Philippines at Eduline gives one learner one tutor, with every session built around where your first language collides with English, which looks different for a Korean and a Japanese speaker. This country has taught English to learners across Asia for decades, mostly in groups, and a group moves at the pace of the class.

What is

ESL tutoring

One-to-one English for learners whose first language is not English: foreign students studying here, children in international schools, and adults who need English for work or daily life. Sessions are built around where the learner's own language collides with English, which differs sharply from one first language to the next.

Key Points

  • For learners whose first language is not English

  • Built around your language's specific collisions with English

  • Speaking, listening, reading and writing, weighted to the gap

  • Works alongside a group academy, filling the gaps a class leaves

  • Hourly rate set by your level and first language, confirmed before you book

Learning Formats

Two ways to run it

Both used here, often alongside an existing course

  1. Online

The usual arrangement, including for learners who have not arrived yet and for those studying at an academy who want extra hours without travel. Reading and writing work in a shared document; speaking practice records.

    45-60 minutes
    • Works before you arrive
    • Fits around an existing course
    • Speaking practice recorded
  2. At your home

Better for younger children and for learners whose difficulty is confidence. A familiar room removes the audience, which is often most of what is stopping them. A home visit here lasts ninety minutes: a five- or six-year-old gets that time broken into several short rounds of sounds, words and games, while a teenager or adult puts the extra length into more talking time than a single online hour would leave room for.

    90-120 minutes
    • No audience to perform for
    • Good for children
    • Written work corrected as produced

How we teach this

Starting with your first language, because that is what shaped the problem

Progression Path

Four learners who need different things

The common thread is the first language, and it is not much of a thread

  1. A student at a language academy

Here for a term, studying in a group

Already in class several hours a day. What one-to-one adds is the thing the group cannot stop for: your pronunciation problem, your grammar blind spot, the speaking time that gets shared twelve ways.

    Focus Areas

    • Supplements the course, does not repeat it
    • Diagnostic before content
    • Hours arranged around class
  2. A child in an international school

Learning subjects in a language still being built

The hardest position on this page, because the English is not the task: the English is the medium for Science, Math and everything else, and the schoolwork does not wait for the language to catch up.

    Subjects

Academic English for lessons and examsReading textbooks written for nativesWriting to the standard the school expectsVocabulary carried by the subjects

    Focus Areas

    • Language and schoolwork together
    • Subject vocabulary taken seriously
    • No time lost to beginner material
  3. An adult living or working here

    Foreign professional, spouse, business owner

Usually has English that functions and does not satisfy them. The specific complaint is nearly always speaking: able to read reports comfortably and unable to say a sentence at the speed a meeting moves.

    Subjects

Speaking at conversational speedListening in groups and on callsAccuracy that has stopped improvingRegister: formal, casual, written

    Focus Areas

    • Output: speaking and writing, every session
    • Fossilized errors addressed directly
    • Built from their real week
  4. A beginner starting properly

Little or no English so far

Adults and children both. The work is slower and more structured, and the priority is a foundation that does not have to be unlearned later, which is the usual cost of being rushed at the start.

    Focus Areas

    • Errors caught before they set
    • Useful language early
Program Curriculum

What sessions cover

Chosen after finding out what your first language does to your English

A Japanese learner, a Korean learner and a Chinese learner sitting in the same class have three different English problems, and a general curriculum addresses the average of them, which is nobody.

  1. The diagnostic that shapes everything else. Every first language makes some parts of English easy and some parts structurally difficult, and knowing which is which stops a learner from concluding they are simply bad at English.

    Topics covered
    • Sounds your language does not use
    • Grammar with no equivalent at home
    • Habits carried across without noticing
    • What is genuinely hard versus merely unpracticed

Where this is available

Online Tutoring

From anywhere your connection holds, including before you land here

This is where most sessions on this page happen, because so many learners are adding hours around an academy schedule or getting a head start before their flight to the Philippines. Reading and writing happen inside a shared document line by line, and every speaking segment is recorded, so improvement is something a learner can play back and hear for themselves.

  • Fits around an existing course
  • Start before you arrive
  • Speaking practice recorded

Timezone: Set to Philippine Standard Time (UTC+8), matched to your own time zone if you're calling in from elsewhere

In-Person Tutoring

At home, in a quiet room with no audience

In-home lessons help for the same reason a quiet room helps a nervous or young speaker: fewer eyes on a shaky first attempt. Write in with your neighborhood, and we match the ESL tutor who lives nearest you.

Who This Program Serves

Who this is for

Five situations, and two that belong on other pages

Signed up for group classes at a language school, with a schedule that doesn't pause for one student's pronunciation slip or grammar gap. That gap is what brings the most people to this page, and a single well-aimed hour often closes it.

6

common pitfalls

What goes wrong

Six ways ESL learners stall

Several of them happen to learners who are doing everything they were told

01

Treating a structural difficulty as a personal failing

Why it happens

If your first language has no articles, English articles will be hard for years and no amount of effort makes them feel natural quickly. Learners who do not know this is expected decide they are bad at English and stop asking.

Our solution

Find out early which of your problems come from your first language. It does not make them disappear; it makes them a known, finite list with a fix for each.

02

Studying more when the gap is speaking

Why it happens

Study is comfortable, measurable and solitary, and it builds knowledge. Production grows only by producing. This is why learners with excellent grammar freeze in conversation and respond by studying more grammar.

Our solution

Shift session time toward talking, badly, under mild pressure. Progress feels worse and moves faster, which is an unpleasant combination that most learners need somebody else to insist on.

03

Errors nobody corrects any more

Why it happens

Once a learner is understandable, correction stops: colleagues, friends and often teachers all let it go, because the meaning arrived. The mistakes settle in and become part of how the person speaks English.

Our solution

Have somebody name the pattern behind the instances. A set error is a habit, and habits are rebuilt by repetition, many correct uses in a row.

04

Only ever hearing classroom English

Why it happens

Teachers speak clearly, slowly, and with the intention of being understood. Nobody else does, so a learner can follow every lesson and understand almost nothing at a canteen table.

Our solution

Put real speech into sessions deliberately: normal speed, several accents, more than one speaker at once. Frustrating at first and the only thing that closes the gap.

05

Silence read as failure

Why it happens

Many learners, particularly children, go through a period of understanding a great deal and producing very little. The people around them, at school and at home, often respond with pressure, which reliably makes it last longer.

Our solution

Treat it as a stage with a name: the silent period. Keep input high, keep demands low, and let production start where the cost of a mistake is small.

06

A course built for the average learner

Why it happens

Group curricula have to serve everyone, so they cover the shared material and skim what only some of the room needs. If your particular difficulty falls in that second category, you can attend faithfully for months and never meet it.

Our solution

Use the group for what groups are good at (volume, exposure, other voices), and use one-to-one for the thing the group structurally cannot stop for. They are not competing purchases.

The most expensive of these is the first. A learner who believes their difficulty is personal, when it is structural, tends to conclude they have no aptitude, which is almost never what is happening.

The ESL rate, by level and setting

Built around your first language; what moves the total is your level, and where the lesson happens

From

₱500 / hour

Home visit, Metro Manila₱700 / hour
Online₱500 / hour
Home visit, provincial areas₱500 / hour

Per hour, one tutor with one learner. Home visits run at least 1.5 hours. Packages: 12 hours at 5% off, 24 hours at 10% off.

The figure above sits at the beginner end of this page's own range. English for someone starting from very little, a child carrying schoolwork in it, an academy student closing one gap, and an adult smoothing years-old habits are four different amounts of work per hour, so the rate does not stay flat across them. Setting matters just as much: an in-person hour inside Metro Manila is priced highest, and a screen session and an in-person hour outside Metro Manila both sit one step below it at the same figure. Committing to a longer block, twelve hours or twenty-four, lowers what each of those hours costs, shown next to the figure above. Most learners here add one to three hours a week around an existing course, which is usually enough to cover a term at that pace.

FAQ

What ESL learners ask

Including the one about whether being here is enough on its own

I am already at a language academy. Why would I add one-to-one?

Because the two do different things and the group is structurally unable to do the second. A class gives you hours, exposure and other voices, all of which matter. What it cannot do is stop for your pronunciation problem, give you a third of the speaking time, or spend a session on the one grammar point that is hard for speakers of your language and easy for everyone else in the room. Most learners here get more from a few focused hours added to a course than from changing courses.

Other questions

Tell us your first language and what you cannot do yet

Whether that is speaking at speed, following a group, writing for school, or an error you know you keep making. Say whether you are already studying somewhere. A teacher goes through your message and writes back with what a one-to-one hour would add on top of your current classes.
