English tutor jobs Philippines for DepEd English, Grade 2 to Grade 11
English tutor jobs Philippines: part-time Eduline placements teaching one learner DepEd English, face to face where the learner lives or online. MATATAG gives English a subject of its own from Grade 2, and the requests you can take reach all the way to Grade 11 Effective Communication. Applying costs nothing.
What an English tutor teaches through the school year
English requests follow the DepEd calendar, so one tutor's week can hold a Grade 2 pupil sounding out words and a Grade 11 student rehearsing a talk. Grade 1 under MATATAG has no subject called English: its subjects are Language, Reading and Literacy, Mathematics, Makabansa and GMRC. In Grade 2 those two language subjects give way to English and Filipino, which makes Grade 2 the year a pupil first opens an English book of their own. Since RA 12027 lapsed into law on 10 October 2024, Kinder to Grade 3 classes are taught in Filipino and English again, so a tutor at the table can switch to Filipino to explain an English rule to a seven-year-old.
A Grade 2 session in Term 1 starts with sounds: rhymes, breaking a word into its sounds, and reading three-letter words with a vowel in the middle, such as pen, sit or mop. Later weeks bring guided reading, new vocabulary and sentences built aloud. Grade 3 joins MATATAG this school year, and its English asks for a story read fluently, its characters, setting and main idea named, and a short composition written about it.
Grades 4 to 6 bring longer passages, questions that ask the learner to infer what a text leaves unsaid, and compositions that are graded. Here the tutor marks the way the class teacher does. Ask for the teacher's rubric and the last composition that came back marked in red, then score the new draft against the same criteria with the learner reading along. Agree on two or three revisions, have the learner make them before the session ends, and keep the marked copies in one folder so each draft can be laid beside the one before it. Planning comes first at this level: five lines on what each paragraph will say, written before the opening sentence.
From Grade 7 the subject turns literary. Grade 7 learners judge Philippine prose for its clarity, purpose and audience, analyze short stories and novels, and publish an original short story about local and national identity. Grade 8 centers on Afro-Asian literature, read for characterization, plot, conflict, point of view, historical context, tone, diction and symbolism. Classes stay with one text across several weeks, and the tutor works the same way at the table: one story, read closely, a passage per sitting, with the learner marking the lines that carry the meaning.
Two curricula sit side by side this year. MATATAG reaches Grade 10 only in SY 2027-2028, so a Grade 10 student still follows the older MELC-based list while a Grade 9 student down the street works from MATATAG. Grade 11 then takes Effective Communication, a Strengthened SHS core subject taught in English and Filipino at CEFR B2, two hours a week for 80 hours a year. It spans personal and interpersonal, social and cultural, academic and training, and professional and work contexts, and asks students to carry an extended talk or exchange and act on feedback, so sessions rehearse talks out loud and revise the written pieces sentence by sentence.
This role is English as a school subject. Adults preparing for IELTS or OET, and professionals working on English for the job, are served by Eduline's IELTS, OET and Business English roles; learners still new to the language belong to ESL; readers far below their grade go to the Reading role; and full UPCAT review sits with Entrance Exam Review. If you also teach one of those, name it when you apply and hold both roles.
Moments in the school year that bring English requests
Under DepEd Order No. 009, s. 2026, this school year opened on 8 June and closes on 8 April 2027: 201 class days split into three terms, each closing on its own exam. These are the points where learners book an English tutor.
- Term exams
Each term closes with a term exam in the last week of its block, after two summative assessments. Reported dates put the Term 1 exam on 1 September 2026, the Term 2 exams on 3 and 4 December 2026 and Term 3 from 4 January 2027. Sessions before each one go to the kinds of texts the exam uses and to written answers under a timer.
- Written works and performance tasks
From Grade 4 to Grade 12, each learning area sets three to five written works and two to three performance tasks every term. In English those are compositions, speeches and oral readings scored with a rubric, and a learner often arrives with the rubric and the task sheet in hand.
- The ELLNA at the end of Key Stage 1
A national paper-based multiple-choice test of early language and literacy, in English and Filipino. Its last round, 3 to 7 November 2025 under DepEd Memorandum No. 087, s. 2025, went to every public Grade 4 learner. No round for this school year had been announced as of October 2026.
- Speech, essay and campus journalism contests
School competitions now sit in the end-of-term block and national ones in the break between school years. The National Schools Press Conference 2026 ran 13 to 17 April in Ormoc City for regional first-place winners, and plagiarized or improperly AI-generated entries can be disqualified, so coaching keeps every line in the student's own words.
English levels you can take on
Choose the grades you teach with confidence and list them when you apply. Offers come only within the levels you chose.
- Grade 2 and Grade 3 English
Sounds, three-letter words, guided reading and a first short composition, with Filipino used to explain where the learner needs it.
- Reading and composition, Grades 4 to 6
Longer passages read for inference, paragraphs planned before they are written, and the term's written works taken from first draft to final copy.
- Junior high literature, Grades 7 and 8
Philippine prose and the learner's own short story in Grade 7, Afro-Asian literature read closely in Grade 8.
- Effective Communication, Grade 11
The English half of a Strengthened SHS core subject at CEFR B2: talks, exchanges and written pieces rehearsed across four contexts.
- Speech, essay and press conference coaching
Oratorical pieces, essay contests and campus journalism, drafted by the student and sharpened over several sessions before the end-of-term block.
What you need to apply
- English you speak and write cleanly, and the ability to name the grammar rule behind a mistake in a learner's own sentence.
- Proof of a finished degree (diploma or TOR); a background in English, literature, education or communication counts in your favor.
- Familiarity with MATATAG English for the grades you take, plus the MELC list Grade 10 classes still use this year.
- Enough Filipino to explain an English rule to a Grade 2 or Grade 3 learner.
- Comfort marking compositions and speech drafts against a class teacher's rubric, and explaining each mark so the learner can act on it.
- One valid Philippine government ID. A PRC teaching license strengthens an application; English tutors without one apply too.
- An NBI clearance, secured before you start your first English learner.
- Weekly teaching hours you can keep for a whole term, named in your application.
- For online English, a laptop or desktop with webcam and mic, and internet steady enough for an hour-long call.
How English placements are paid
English placements are paid by the hour, and the hourly rate is written into each offer before you accept it. The grade, the work asked for (a Grade 3 reader or a Grade 11 speech rehearsal) and whether you travel to the learner or teach on a video call set that figure.
On your call, ask what the English grades you listed currently pay and the team answers. Each offer then states the subject, the grade, the session times and the rate in writing, so you know the full terms of a placement before its first lesson.
From application to your first English lesson
- 1
List your grades and formats
Apply with the English levels you cover, from Grade 2 reading to Grade 11 Effective Communication, whether you take home visits, online lessons or both, and your free hours each week.
- 2
Show your degree and ID
A government ID and your TOR or diploma, plus a PRC card if you hold one. Your NBI clearance follows before the first English placement.
- 3
Walk the team through your grades
A call about the texts and tasks you know best: early-grade phonics, junior high literature, compositions marked by rubric, or Grade 11 talks.
- 4
Take an English placement
The offer names the learner's grade, the English focus, the schedule and the hourly rate. Once you confirm, the first lesson is set. Ask for a different learner whenever you want one and you are re-matched, and any learner who asks for another tutor gets a free tutor replacement.
What English tutor applicants ask first
Can I tutor English if my degree is outside English or education?
Yes. The call checks what you can do with English in front of a learner: explain a grammar point in plain words, ask a question that shows whether a story was understood, and comment usefully on a paragraph. A degree in English, literature, education or communication helps, and licensed teachers may show their PRC card, though the role requires neither.
How do I teach grammar without endless drills?
Start from what the learner wrote. Errors carried over from Filipino, such as tense, articles and subject-verb agreement, show up in their own compositions, and fixing them there sticks better than a worksheet. Pick the one error that repeats most, explain it, and have the learner correct every instance in the draft.
What do I do with a learner who is shy to speak in class?
A one-to-one lesson gives them a room with no classmates watching. Have them read aloud first, then answer short questions, then retell a passage in their own words, and lengthen the turns week by week. For a Grade 11 student the same steps lead up to rehearsing a full Effective Communication talk.
How different is a Grade 2 session from a Grade 11 session?
A Grade 2 hour is sounds, short words and reading aloud, with Filipino used to explain where it helps. A Grade 11 session is a talk delivered and timed, or a written piece revised against the teacher's feedback. Home visits run 90 to 120 minutes and online lessons 60 to 90, and the first session sorts out which of reading, writing, grammar and speaking needs the most time.
What if the learner brings a printed module with no answer key?
Work from the text before the answers. Read the passage or exercise yourself while the learner starts on it, then have the learner show you where each answer comes from: the line that names the setting, the sentence that reveals the narrator's point of view, the word that signals a past tense. An answer the learner can point to in the text is one they can defend in class the next day, and an answer they cannot point to becomes the next thing you teach. Short written responses in the module get marked the same way as a composition draft.
