Reading and Numeracy Tutor Philippines for Phonics, Comprehension and Number Sense
Reading and numeracy tutors in the Philippines build the three skills the rest of school stands on: hearing the sounds in words, reading with understanding, and knowing what a number means. The programs suit children from Kindergarten to Grade 3, plus older learners whose foundation turned out thin, one to one online or at home.
Why Kindergarten to Grade 3 carries so much weight
Between Kindergarten and Grade 3 a child learns to read and to count, and from Grade 4 school assumes both are in place: science arrives as text, and every written calculation leans on place value. DepEd's MATATAG curriculum, now covering Kindergarten through Grade 9, cut its required competencies to give these foundations more room.
The gaps stay quiet. A child can recite numbers to a hundred and read a page aloud flawlessly while understanding little, and the report card stays acceptable until fractions or a reading-heavy unit exposes it.
Filipino, English, and the language spoken at home
Most Filipino children learn to read in two languages together, and the home language is often a third, such as Cebuano, Ilocano or Hiligaynon. Which language comes first depends on the school and region, and DepEd's rules on mother-tongue teaching in the early grades have shifted recently, so ask your child's school what it uses this year.
Filipino spells close to how it sounds, so decoding comes quickly. English spelling is irregular, and the same child can slow sharply when English books arrive, then decide they are bad at reading. A tutor who treats the two as separate systems, and tells the child so, protects that confidence. An English word problem can likewise defeat a child who understood the arithmetic.
Clues that show up during homework and at the table
Listen to your child read a short page aloud, then ask what happened in it. Put seven spoons on the table and ask how many without letting them recount. Notice fingers on simple sums past Grade 3, books avoided that they can read, or an operation picked from one keyword. Each is a clue that tells a tutor where to look first.
Tutoring works hand in hand with home: ten minutes of daily reading and everyday counting between sessions multiply what each hour builds, and the tutor maps the foundation stage by stage so you see each one land. A child in Grade 3 or above reading well below grade level needs assessment-led remedial work, which is what our Reading Intervention program is for.
Matching your child to one of the three programs
- Phonics & Early Reading
Pick this when your child, roughly four to eight, is still learning to read, or reads Filipino comfortably and stalls in English.
- Reading Enhancement
Pick this when your child, preschool to Grade 6, reads the words accurately and gets little meaning or enjoyment from them.
- Numeracy Foundation
Pick this when your child counts easily and cannot yet explain which amount is bigger or why carrying works, including an older learner struggling with grade-level math.
Questions about Reading & Numeracy
What age should my child start reading or numeracy tutoring?
Sound games and number play can begin around four, with no worksheets, and letter and number work suits five or six. The more useful question is whether to look before Grade 4, and the answer is yes if something at home feels off.
Will the tutor teach in Filipino, English or our home language?
Usually in the language your child reads at school, often Filipino and English together. Kung Bisaya o Ilocano ang gamit sa bahay, sabihin lang po, because it helps the tutor explain a new English word through one the child already knows. Finding a tutor who speaks a regional language depends on your area.
Is this the same as Math or English tutoring for my child's grade?
These programs work on the layer underneath the grade: quantity, place value, letter sounds, fluency and comprehension. Grade-level tutoring follows this term's DepEd lessons. If only the current chapter is hard, that is the better fit, and the first session largely finds out which you have.
Online tutor or home tutor for a young child?
Home sessions suit young children, since cards, books and counters work better in small hands than on a screen. Tell us where you live, and a reading tutor from your area brings the cards and books to your house. Online reaches anywhere in the Philippines, with shorter sessions and coins or blocks at your end. Phonics and number sessions carry one rate per hour, sent to you in writing once we know your child's age and the format. Little ones sometimes warm to a different voice, and a new reading tutor is sent at no cost whenever you say so.
